before using wp automatic upgrade you have to make sure to chmod 777 your root folder.
recently i’ve used that plugin to upgrade nuriwan blog.
of course you can make change as much as you want if you host it your self or buying a host space to the hosting provider. Some hosting provider use cpanel which include wp automatic installation by their fantastico script.
