Forum: Localhost Installs
In reply to: updating plugins on localhostThanks. informative read, but not entirely satisfactory for two reasons:
- didn’t solve my issue – based on the myriad suggestions for chowning/chgrping, i decided to chgrp the dirs wp-content, wp-content/plugins to www-data (the user/group that seems to be running wordpress in my localhost). Now the plugin update fails because of “inconsistent file permissions”
- which brings me to the second point:
- might it be possible to include any chmod/chown/chgrp work in the installation script itself, by asking what kind of webserver etc. we are running on?
- OR, list a set of such commands that the user can run themselves, so they are aware and responsible for changes to their system?
- OR, update the “changing file permissions” page to provide more than the generic info available there?
Ultimately, i went into the plugins folder and did some hacky chgrp’ing on various folders and files, which seemed to solve the akismet update, but i’m under no illusion that installing/upgrading other plugins, or themes will not run into similar issues.

In reply to: Running install.php gives me a 500 internal server errorthanks for the responses. Can’t believe I forgot to check the log despite being a dev in the past.
also thanks for the link to localwp. I’ll install that as well to play around with it.
I just got impatient, removed all the WordPress files and copied them back. This time I didn’t bother changing file permissions at all and it installed just fine.Forum: Themes and Templates

In reply to: Installing on my local computerThank you sir. i took the easy way out (your second suggestion) and stuck the index.php in the DirectoryIndex directive within the httpd.conf.
Looking good now.
Much appreciated.

Forum: Installing WordPress
In reply to: how to install WP on localhostBeing a “king of pain” i installed all components myself, so i’m not familiar with how the database and the user got created when you used xampplite, but here’s what gave me the same error using phpMyAdmin:
when i added the new user, i left the “Host” field at “any”. this
made me unable to login to the wordpress db using host “localhost”.
i deleted the user, then recreated it this time switching the value for “Host” to “local” at which point it correctly used localhost.
hoping for a swift resolution to your issue.
best,
Nilesh
