  • Maybe just use a shopping cart like WooCommerce – but then on the checkout page provide ordering info?

Or you could build a custom post type/template and just do it with the Page structure.

Let me know if that makes sense…

This isn’t exactly an urgent response – but you might have better luck on the GetShopped Forums.

I’ve had trouble with variation settings in WP eCommerce as well – but not quite sure what you are referring to.

S2 Member is free (extra payment gateways are in the premium version) and should do what you are talking about.

I’ve never built a store like that, but I’m pretty sure you can do it with WooCommerce group extensions – see http://www.woothemes.com/extension/groups-woocommerce/

Sweet – sounds like you’ll be set then. Good luck!

    Robin,

Yeah – I mostly agree with that. WordPress + shopping cart does of course scale, but for someone who’s not technically-oriented – it’s a choice of who to rely on…. a WordPress consultant or a company. They both have up and downsides.

If you can find someone awesome (like yourself – I like your stuff BTW – we should talk), and understand the costs + advantages, then yeah, WordPress is a safer, more customizable, and sometimes more affordable fit long-term fit – but sometimes it’s hard to get the right client/consultant fit, so it’s better to go with something out of the box.

But I’d still disagree with wp ecommerce – even their paid support just wasn’t up to a good standard when I used them (a month ago), and their feature set has been really outpaced over the past year by WooCommerce and Shopp – I wish they could get on it, because I feel like they have a much more unbiased setup.

WooCommerce steers you way too much towards WooThemes (of course) and Shopp is a bit pricey. If WP eCommerce could catch up – that would be awesome.

Not sure I understand… so you’re buying the stuff from other people?

I guess you could start it by using WooCommerce or Shopp shopping cart plugin – but instead of plugging in PayPal – you could just make the checkout a custom instruction page where they submit their PayPal address.

    Hey jon,

I’ve never done exactly that before – however, I’m pretty sure you can use the User system already built into WordPress to allow people to buy, post, and edit.

Use bbPress plugin for the forum, and something like WooCommerce, or Shopp for the online store part.

I believe they will all play nice.

I’ve never seen a solution that does exactly that.

I’m pretty sure that would require several custom plugins to be built – especially the part where how they fill out the form that assigns them to a group.

There are shopping cart plugins that support subscriptions though, such as WooCommerce subscriptions. http://www.woothemes.com/extensions/woocommerce-subscriptions/

And I’m sure Shopp has extensions as well.

Both Woo and Shopp have developers you could get a quote from to build a customer extension.

    Good luck!

WooCommerce works well if you also like the themes that plug into it.

jon is right about Shopp – I’ve always been impressed.

I’d stay away from WP eCommerce. I know they have a ton of fans – but I’ve found it to need much too much customization and duct tape to make it work just right.

Despite being a huge WordPress fan – I am curious about any reason you’re steering away from the out of the box solutions like Shopify / BigCommerce?

Depends on how complex your store is.

If you are just using PayPal (or something similarly simple), and are shipping less than 100 products, and don’t mind spending you own time customizing WordPress, then WordPress is a good way.

But if you are planning something a bit larger scale…Shopify is the way to go. Everything works out of the box. And it might be cheaper overall than getting stuck with a WordPress bug and having to bring in a consultant.

Basically what I’ve seen (I do AdWords, Analytics, etc) is that WordPress is great to start…but Shopify scales better, and allows you to focus on the store rather than the tech.

@robin – I’d add a bit of nuance – wp ecommerce is a good example, it takes a *lot* of customization to get just right, but is free and fast to plugin to get started.

Hey thanks Naomi – I saw your group on Meetup, it looks like ya’ll have a nice structure going.

Right now I’m hearing crickets around Athens when it come to WordPress – but I’ll definitely be in touch if I find anyone else interested in a group.

    Thanks!

I’m looking to start a WordPress Meetup in Athens, GA.

Are there any WordPress users, designers, or developers who’d like to meetup in Athens, GA?

I couldn’t tell much from your source code, but is the widget just not saving? If so, will it save other widgets.

Or is it saving, but not displaying?

Also, be sure to include the full script in the widget.
