I guess I should be using a child theme, came across whilst reading other articles and now understand the safety aspect re that. But no I have been altering the style.css and changing the values back when they did not work. I have copied and saved the css folder as a back up onto my desk top also.
i have installed stalled Simple Custom CSS plugin but again I could not figure/find out with firebug the right code to udpate using Simple Custom SCC plugin.
