In reply to: [Polylang] Changing language has no impactOk so I trashed the translated About us page completely (i.e. went into Trash can and deleted permanently). Created two new translated pages for About us and Services and titled them using Latin script and dummy content, added these two to my Chinese menu. Meaning that now the urls are now all in Latin..
And hey presto it now appears to work! It doesnt load the home page in English anymore but instead stays in Chinese and shows the dummy content
Thank you so much for getting me this far – any idea how I can make the titles of the translated pages in Chinese without reverting to Chinese character URLs?
Is it just a case of creating all the pages with Latin alphabet titles and then publishing them (which I am guessing sets the URL permanently) and then going back and changing the names to Chinese script after or is there a better way?

So when its in Chinese I have a home page called 首页 which works fine, the additional page 关于 is the supposed translated page of the About page in English but when you click it, it reloads the Home page and in English. The only other link on that menu is the language switcher, in time I will add the others to replicate the order and content of the English one.

In reply to: [Polylang] Changing language has no impactThanks for your answers Chrystl. I have been through the guide – the main positive change is I can now seem to have a homepage in the second language! The key change that did this appears to be checking “The front page url contains the language code instead of the page name or page id”
Outstanding problem is for the other pages in my second language menu – when I click on the menu links it just reloads the website in English on the English home page. I created these pages in pretty much the same way i.e. say I have an existing page called “About”, I go into “About” from the all Pages menu by clicking Edit under it. In the top right, I clicked on the + which took me to a new page which I called About (but in chinese), then some dummy text and then Publish.
In the Pages menu I therefore have About with a tick under English and a pencil icon under Chinese and the Chinese About page has English pencil icon and tick under chinese
I then went to my second language menu and added this new Chinese About page to the menu…and yes it appears on the menu when I language switch to chinese but clicking it just takes me Home and back to English. Confused :S

In reply to: [Polylang] Changing language has no impactThank you. I go to Appearance->Menus then find page in the left hand box, check it and click Add to Menu then drag it up and down the Menu Structure until correct then Save
Oh and putting this issue aside, when I am in the Chinese menu on the website (ie for this to work I need to have no home page and the nothing found perhaps try searching blah page) none of the links take me to the blank pages I created (i.e. to be later filled with translated English to Chinese) it kind of seems to try and then give up and dumps me back to the English home page with the menu in English again.
I’ve read and read again the documentation on how to create the translated pages (https://polylang.wordpress.com/documentation/setting-up-a-wordpress-multilingual-site-with-polylang/translating-posts-or-pages/) but I really dont know what I’ve done wrong – the guide in the link is quite brief but sure I couldnt have messed it up that badly

In reply to: [Polylang] Changing language has no impactSorry I wanted to add one thing to this,as Ive now done it step by step and checked back the site each time to see when the problem occurs
– Activate Plug in and do language settings, add sidebar language switch widget. fine
– Create one menu and set it for the English language – fine
– Create a simple second menu for Chinese language using just three pages – this also appears to be fine. I go to the site and toggle easily between the full English menu and abbreviated chinese menu and the strings also correctly change according to what I wrote in the settingsI then start to create a few dummy pages by going into the English ones, clicking “+” next to translate and then create the soon to be filled chinese pages and add to the menu.
– The problem arises when I do this for the Front page (what I call home). Soon as I create a Chinese translated copy of this and add it to the menu it messes up the switch between English and Chinese on the website – the strings dont change and the menu is the English one. I have to delete this page and in fact go into the trash to clear it permanently to get the language switch to work again.SO, how do I create a second language home landing page for when Chinese is selected? Right now its a rather poor: “Nothing found, Perhaps searching can help” plus a search box
Also can there be common pages between the two languages (e.g. a page I want to appear in both E and C menus) without it meaning that it will revert back to the English site if I am using it in Chinese mode?
Regards and thank you
