Thanks, @chenszo. Temporary sort-of success with that. I added the two lines in wp-config.php as per your instructions, using the ‘proper’ url, ie the one I’d want site visitors to use. That didn’t work. So I changed the WP_SITEURL to the one with the server address (had to hunt to find that as I stupidly didn’t make a note of it). That didn’t work either. Then I changed both to the server address.

I couldn’t get in via my browser, using that same server address, but the file manager has a WP-ADMIN file it describes as quick access without logging in. That got me into the dashboard.

Then I saved the Permalinks as you advised. And now it’s gone again – Safari can’t open the file.

I’ll have to stop now as I’m going out this evening (I’m in UK). I’ll repeat your instructions in the morning in case I made a mistake. If all else fails, my host has a link to reinstall WordPress, overwriting the existing installation. Slightly annoying as I’ll lose some text I wrote, but I can rewrite it.

@threadi – thanks, but site health shows no errors.

@chenszo – thank you for your detailed reply. I couldn’t see anything about Post names under Permalinks. Maybe I didn’t look in the right place. There was a message about updating my .htaccess file – which rings a vague bell from long ago but I can’t remember where to find it or what I need to do to it.

I checked the two addresses as you advised. They were different – my fault as they originally both included the host’s server name. I took that part out of the Site Address. So to make them match I set them both the same as the Site Address. Looks like that was a fatal error. I’m now getting the “Safari can’t open the page” message and I can’t find a way back from that. So I’m guessing that’s how I messed up in the first place and now I’ve really broken it. Unless there’s another way into the back end where I can edit the code I’ve broken.
