I had the same problem.
After deactivation of the plugin “EditorsKit” saving of posts works again.
On my site I have exactly the same problem. Without pre_get_posts everything works normal. I hope we will find a solution soon.

You didn’t understand my problem.
I know how to protect a page with a password – thanks.
I tried to rewrite the wp-login.php?action=postpass to login/action/postpass but the .htpasswd protection still works 🙁
Any other suggestions?
