I contacted the Theme Developer and he tells me that the theme is using standard WP pagination functions and I have confirmed this by activating various other themes including the default themes and have the exact same issue.
Significantly, by inserting category into the URL it all works fine, I get to see the second, third etc pages.
So, why do I not have ‘category’ in the URL? i.e. http://mywebsite.co.nz/category/my-category/page/2/
I get the exact same error with both the default template and my custom one.
I am using WP 3.2.1.
Hopefully somebody comes up with a fix soon as there aren’t many other business directory plugins out there that are any good or work.

Fantastic, thanks. I didn’t realise that the ‘options’ in the Screen Options dropdown change with context.
