well for this specific theme the image files were not in an image folder when I downloaded the theme. All image files were loose with the other files. Does that make a difference? Should I create and image subfolder?

[2] Where do you see the “pieces missing”… ? In the preview when you try to activate the theme in the admin panel, or on your live site when the theme is activated ?
on the preview they show up however when I open my url….well you can see. For instance I currently have the theme Blue Drop loaded (http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/blue-drop). And only the background shows up on my live site. I’ve tried several themes and it happens to all of them.
