It was an issue in the General settings, I used to have the wordpress Address as melaniemartinphotography.co.uk / site address as photographerbirmingham.org, but that no longer seems to work, so I changed it both to photographerbirmingham.org and alas: one can comment again.
Never been a problem before so I assume it’s something to do with upgrade to 3.3

Reverted back to default setting for permalinks, checked if comments were working … no luck
