I got an error similar to yours after updating WordPress to the latest version 4.0.
When I look in design->editor my style.css was empty! No line of code existing. I had no clue whats going on and tried a few things. Things changed after I put a copy of the index.php of the parent theme in the folder of the child theme. Error notes vanished, style.css shows code again.
