Weird. Works for me now also, although I’m on my home computer. I’ll try it again on my work computer tommorrow at lunch.
I’m a WP noobe with the same problem. I wanted a static home page so I created a new page called “home” and pointed to it via Settings > Reading > Front Page Displays. Made a different page my posts page which seemed to work fine.
Now I have two “Home” pages showing up on my navigation bar, both pointing to root.

Any ideas?
I’m trying to do the same thing. Did you ever figure this out?
