OK – that explanation makes sense – and it is great you were able to fix that issue.

But it alerts me to a potential problem. I have my AE settings at 50 words and finish the sentence. I craft my text carefully so the excerpt will show just the amount of info I want readers to preview on the category pages.

When there are longish captions, will this mean my excerpts are shorter? In fact glancing down my category pages that seems to be the case. It is not a huge deal with the ‘finish sentence’ setting on, but it does affect some posts.

Is there any way to not count the caption length in the excerpt length?

OK – I’d recommend changing the ‘recommended’ note on your interface though. That was the only setting I did not change, because I assumed if it was ‘recommended’ something bad might happen if I changed it.

ALSO I must admit I’d be curious to know what changed – as I said in (2) above it has worked with the ‘recommended’ settings all this time and suddenly didn’t work.

I hope there’s no danger that might happen again, as it makes my website look terrible with hardly any images.

Boom! That’s it!
When I uncheck ‘remove shortcodes’, all images show up fine. I guess <caption> is a shortcode and not a tag.

Two things though:
1. the reason I have ‘remove shortcodes’ checked is because it says ‘recommended’. Are you sure that unchecking it won’t cause me other problems? Is there something I should look out for or check out?

2. I’ve had it set like that the whole time I have been using AE (several years) and it has always worked fine till recently. So something must have changed somewhere.

I did test some other plugins, and I tested AE on another site which has a simpler set up with few other plugins and got the same result. But I’ll check it out further and let you know if I find something interesting.

For now though, you have solved my immediate problem so THANKS VERY MUCH! I greatly appreciate your work.

OK – below find code for two posts. When I display them as single pages both show their image. When I display them on a category archive, the one with a caption displays no image and the one with no caption displays its image. Hope this is what you wanted. Good luck!

No I’ve always had it set to don’t remove any tags. I just looked at the other setting when I was trying to figure out what had gone wrong.

Your suggestion gave me hope though as I had not noticed that drop down where you can add more tags to the ‘remove all tags except the following option’. So I went ahead and changed to that option, and added the caption tag to the list and selected it and saved.

Sadly however it made no diff – still displays the category archive with excerpts showing images only if they have no captions. Images with captions seem to be suppressed.

If you have another suggestion I’d be glad to check it out. Sorry for the hassle – I seem to be the only one to have this problem, which is surprising.

Update on this. The effect (no images with captions in excerpts) occurs with other themes too.

It’s been suggested it may result from one of the recent WP updates, rather than from a change to a theme or plugin.

If that’s the case, I’m told, it might need a fix at your end? I notice that in your list of tags that can be stripped/retained, you do include but not <caption>. Would explicitly including <caption> tags make a difference. Apologies if this is a ridiculous suggestion – I have no real knowledge, just noticed this as I was rooting around to figure out what had gone wrong.

Anyway, wondering if you could look into this a little more? Would be hugely appreciated, as the look of my site has plummeted due to this change!

Thanks for your prompt reply. Yes it was 4.2.5 I was using before, and you are right, reinstalling that version makes no difference.

I will have to check with the theme developer – perhaps one of their updates has changed something. Drat – it is such a nuisance when I don’t notice immediately that an update has affected something! Makes it hard to track down.

Thanks – it turned out this was a server side problem with my host. Eventually they resolved it and all fine again now.

Thanks. I don’t use lightbox.
I don’t know what plugin it can be (I use a lot so it would take a while to test them all; if you can suggest something to narrow down the search I am happy to try).
The odd thing though is the extra javascript notifications are not consistent per page – sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn’t).
As long as it is not creating a problem with my tracking, or indicating a problem with my site, it doesn’t really bother me too much.

After an hour or two of to-ing and fro-ing with my host (marvellous host: Siteground – highly recommend) everything is good.
Sorry – I had read your php limit message but did not realise it applied to me with 4.4.1.

When the problems first started a few weeks ago I reverted to 4.4.1 via plugin edit (as you suggested) – and that resolved things at the time.
Then a few days ago I suddenly found my whole site down with 500 error and the slimstat-related msg posted by others.
I disabled slimstat (still at 4.4.1) via c-panel and deleted browscap-db.php.
Left slimstat deactivated to see what would be announced here (I can afford to be without it for a few days).
Now when I try to activate, update, anything, it gives me a 500 error (just in the plugins page, fortunately, not the whole site).
I note browscap-db.php has reappeared in my c-panel file manager – don’t know if that is good or bad?!
I’d like to get slim stat working again with my database intact if possible. Is there a way to recover this or should I delete and reinstall?
Thanks for your great free plugin and for trying so hard to help us all via this forum.
PS this may be dumb (I know nothing about all this stuff) but could it have anything to do with a jetpack conflict? I noticed when the problem first started and I was re-enabling plugins to see which had caused the problem – everything was fine till I had BOTH JP and SS active together. I deactivated JP and kept SS which seemed fine till this recent thing.

I’m afraid I do not understand this. If it is something I need to do could you please give more detailed instructions?
If it something to pass on to MemberPress, maybe best if you interact with them yourself?
It would be good if SlimStat and MemberPress could work together.
