I as well have looked deeper into the issue. Right now I am experiencing the following problems:
– Both image aspect ratio and free crop are working well in dutch (default language)
– Right now: free and aspect ratio crop are acting strangely in other languages. For the free crop for example, I can still see the full image, but the cropped zone is visible and the zone outside the crop area is black. Sometimes the aspect ratio crop is not completed at all.

I hereby update my support question: The problem is with the free crop function in general: the image refuses to crop properly on secondary WPML languages. The function with an pre-defined aspect ratio works without problems for translations.
