I am having the same problem and getting the same message. My permissions have been changed to 774 by my hosting client as I have support they have just sent me an email to tell me but it is still not working.
They say that the Store uploads in this folder
/home/plat-linnas01/k/kilburnbridlington.co.uk/user/htdocs/wp-content/uploads
is the same as on the server.
I am at a loss as what to do now.
I have also tried to upload another theme and it fails everytime.

I have done that and it is still not working. I am just in the process of manually updating wordpress 4.2.4 through FTP.
