In reply to: Transferring .com to .orgSo, I’ve taken the decision to revert back to WordPress.com.
This whole thing was stressing me out far, far more than it should have done, and I have spent hours and hours messing around with it to no end.
I have learnt several things:
1. Going self-hosted is more complicated than it sounds, even if a lot of people tell you it’s a good idea. For what is essentially a portfolio / online CV for a freelancer like me, wordpress.com is by far the easier option.
2. I am far less technologically competent than I thought I was.
3. You guys are really helpful. Seriously, I was fully expecting to come on here and get either no response at all, or have a bunch of people tell me that I shouldn’t have tried self-hosting in the first place. Instead, I got some really good advice from some very kind (and patient) people, who have no reason to help a random stranger on the internet, beyond being totally awesome.
I have cancelled my Bluehost account, and am now hoping that http://www.lizbellmedia.co.uk very soon reverts back to what it looked like before. It’s currently a Bluehost holding page, so I’m trying to remain calm until I get my old site back…
Thanks again, WordPress ninjas.

In reply to: Transferring .com to .orgOK, it sounds like I ought to wait a couple of days then and see if it resolves itself. Thank you all so much for your help.

In reply to: Transferring .com to .orgBy the way, I’m online with Bluehost support, and they are suggesting that it could be a browser or ISP issue. But it’s happening with Chrome, Firefox, Safari and also on my iPhone.

In reply to: Transferring .com to .orgI don’t see why I’m being redirected to the wordpress.com login screen though

In reply to: Transferring .com to .orgIs it something to do with the fact that my domain is/was mapped to my wordpress.com site?

Both are set to http://lizbellmedia.co.uk/

In reply to: Transferring .com to .orgSorry, yes I’m in phpMyAdmin, I meant once I’m in there I can’t see Options.

In reply to: Transferring .com to .orgI can’t find what you mean by site database > Options.
When I log in I just get a home screen with some info on – there’s a tab at the top for ‘databases’ but nothing that says siteurl or home

In reply to: Transferring .com to .orgOK, I’ve found phpMyAdmin on Bluehost. What do I need to do in it? I can’t see any option for checking what my URL is set as.
Re flushing DNS, Terminal is not accepting my system password.

In reply to: Transferring .com to .orgOk, I’ve deleted the history – it lets me see my old site now. I’ve also cleared the cache of both Firefox and Chrome, but if I go to wp-admin on either, it’s still taking me to wordpress.com.
I looked up how to flush the DNS, and have got as far as typing a command into Terminal – I have now been terrified by the message: WARNING: Improper use of the sudo command could lead to data loss or the deletion of important system files.

In reply to: Transferring .com to .orgI’m afraid that how-to is beyond me – this is what I mean about being in over my head. I just downloaded phpMyAdmin as per the instructions but I have no idea what to do with it..
By the way, I’m typing lizbellmedia.co.uk but it’s automatically putting https:// in front of it.

In reply to: Transferring .com to .orgI used http://www.lizbellmedia.co.uk to access the site on firefox. Although it keeps changing – it’s now not letting me access it at all because of an untrusted connection.
Thank you for the link to the importer plugin. How do I install it if I keep getting redirected to the .com admin through?
Thank you esmi for the encouragement. You have no idea how much I appreciate it! I feel like an idiot.

In reply to: Transferring .com to .orgSo, progress – I managed to log in via Firefox!
I got halfway through following these instructions and got as far as exporting the content from my .com blog.
When trying to import the .xml file to the .org site, it took me to wordpress.com, asked me to log in, and now http://www.lizbellmedia.co.uk/wp-admin is redirecting me to wordpress.com AGAIN, so I can’t log back in.
Oh and on firefox, http://www.lizbellmedia.co.uk is still my old site. I have literally no idea why.
At this stage, can I sack the whole thing off, get a refund from Bluehost and go back to using .com? What would you advise a mate to do if they had got themselves into this stupid mess?

In reply to: Transferring .com to .orgYep, I emptied it.
I’m now getting a Privacy Error when I try to access my site, or the wp-admin.
When I installed WordPress on Bluehost, all it asked me for was the domain.
