WP Gurus brought me on the track of checking all settings in the website once more. When putting the website live, I moved it from subdomain to the main domain, and followed this guide http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-move-wordpress-from-local-server-to-live-site/ It didn´t mention anything about media path settings, just about updating file url´s in db.
After WP Gurus note I stumbled upon Settings > Media containing a field for the link to the image upload directory, which had not been changed when the website was put live (and changed domains) and thus contained the old domain´s directory…
After changing that setting, the problem was solved.

The images that load on the given page are all ‘old’ images, uploaded before the problem arose; I’ve inserted those to show the difference between old and new images.
All recently uploaded images that you see in this screen http://screencast.com/t/KYXqNQq8O with blank thumbs don’t upload/load, the tw_light.png is indeed one of them.The website was moved from subdomein to main domain over new years (the dev. installation is not the live website but just a copy to test around with the issue).
Is that what you mean?
