Issue resolved. And I credit BPartch for helping me fix the problem. Even though I had read and followed the directions http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory a ga-zillion times, I read it again, and interpreted one point slightly differently. I had never copied all the “root” files to the “wordpress” directory. So I tried that, and it worked!

BPartch–I followed those directions, and it doesnt work for me. I’m not sure if it didn’t work because I don’t need to “move” my directory (I already have wordpress installed at loofamily.us/wordpress
