Hello. I think I have a similar issue; I got a fatal error message while trying to update some plugins on my site. Same cryptic message also appears when I try to login to the admin panel. So I think i’ll need to restore an earlier backup the manual way. I’m a relative newbie to WordPress and have never done a manual backup before; can you refer me to some step by step guidance as to how to do this. For example, using David’s instructions above, where exactly do I copy the unzipped files? And how exactly do I run the SSL through phpMyAdmin (I’m not even sure what that means).

I’m having a similar problem. I’ve tried add photos from media library and uploading them directly. Either way, they just show up in the widget as a blank box with an icon in it. I tried deactivating and reactivating. No improvement. I’m using WP 3.9.1
