Thank you for your patience and help, Ms. esmi, Theme Diva and Forum Moderator. I also appreciate you for your time.

I have not given up yet. This is where I am now:

I have been to WordPress codex, google, an internet blog, the wordpress archives, and the wordpress blog. I thought this post was deleted, but I got an email directing me back here. Trying to do as you direct:

    first:
I read the file you linked to about allowing WP to take over the root domain. Here are the first 2 lines:

1 Go to the General panel.
2 In the box for Site address (URL): change the address to the root directory’s URL. Example: http://example.com

(You have since told me that this is wrong, that I need to go to my webhost’s control panel, but I want to tell you how I was misled):
in step one, ‘general’ is a link that takes you to an ALMOST EXACT screenshot of my panel at WP. This is misleading if I am supposed to be at my webhost’s control panel.

Anyway, in step 2, there is no such box in this “general” panel, which really does look like the one in wordpress. I could not find such a box anywhere else in my dash either.

So I am doing as you asked, I am off to my control panel at the host.
I’m using the file manager and
I’ve found the root directory files. but
I don’t know how many places I have seen wordpress. I cannot tell where the wordpress directory is. It seems to be in several places, so I am still on the hunt. If you could give me any clues as to which one it would be, I would be very grateful.

I really appreciate you telling me to read the directions slowly and carefully. I have done this, repeatedly, and finally gotten this far along. I guess I just don’t have a “math mind” or something. I think I follow directions pretty well, but now I am beginning to wonder. So I must thank you again for helping to bridge the gap in my ignorance. I will try to learn, but I cannot do it in a day or a week, so I must have help. This is of the utmost importance to me and an awful lot of other people, really.
Again, I am much obliged and sincerely yours.

    NOT EXACTLY, BUT CLOSE!

I can’t believe I did it! The other guy had me in the PHP file at my web-host site and still couldn’t get it gone! Been on this problem for HOURS! This only took 2 minutes once I found this post! Thank you, Mr WPyogi, if you see this!
I didn’t try the Quick Edit thing! That sounds even better!

    THANKS SO MUCH!

I can get to the programming by hitting ctrl+u (I’m using Chrome).
It even shows a bunch of php stuff. But I have no idea what I’m looking at, well, not much of an idea.
Maybe I should be trying to contact my web-host?

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SO, THIS IS WHAT I TRIED<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

tried to change the URL at the top of the page from
    https://reformstudentloansnow.org/wp
    to
    https://reformstudentloansnow.org
    – error – URL doesn’t match Directory (which is /home/refojlne/public_html/wp).

So, I tried to change URL at the bottom of the page to
    https://reformstudentloansnow.org
but when I hit the “install’ button, the URL returned back to https://reformstudentloansnow.org/wp

    The directions say:

    Using a pre-existing subdirectory install
If you already have WordPress installed in its own folder (e.g., http://example.com/wordpress), then the steps are as follows

I don’t mean to sound dumb, but I do not know if I have WP installed in its own folder or not! I did a one-click installation of WP. Where do I look? My computer or the webhost control panel?

I found a huge folder for WP 3.6 in my computer (and I already got 3.6.1) but anyhow, I cannot find the address http://reformstudentloans.org/wordpress in there. And I have tried to search the computer for it also.

the dashboard gives mydomainname.org as my address, without the “/wp”/ at the end. I cannot find it anywhere else in the dash, except as a contact for me in a form. I can get into my program, FINALLY, but I’m scared I’ll REALLY mess something up if I fool with it. I read some of the older posts that tell what to do, but they had a LOT of problems getting it done and I cant seem to make it apply to my situation. Please help!
