Thanks MarkRH, that plugin does seem to revert my emojis to the native set. I didn’t try the disable emojis plugin since it’s been so long since it was last updated.
Still curious what this plugin is doing in the background and how it relates to how they were being handled prior to this change in WordPress.

I conveniently installed Google Chrome yesterday after my WordPress automatically updated to 4.4.1 but before I looked at my web site again. So of course I spent hours blaming the browser installation for replacing the Apple emoji set I’m accustomed to seeing on my Mac, only to realize it was WordPress itself inserting Android-like emoji images.
This is the only thread I’ve come across that seems related. How do I get my WordPress site to display device native emojis like before? This should just be a setting.
I see some plugins that spawned around 4.2 but I only observed this issue starting with 4.4.1.
