Last thing and just to clarify “SEO and ranking well takes time”- is this due to the time that search engines take to get round to crawling sites or due to the time required to get content right?

Hi Tim S Many thanks for the information. I’ll stop worrying about the title tag issue and concentrate on keywords in content and backlinks ( and being patient).

Thanks Tim S. I agree with you about Meta tags but Title Tags are crucial for SEO aren’t they? Worried that the Google Webmaster Tools>HTML suggestion> ‘no title tag’ on the homepage could point to the cause of my seo problems and maybe why the homepage not in the serp at all for the domain name search.
