So I can have the new look with no previous posts and comments or the posts and comments with a crap look and no functionality. Despite backing up, clearing out twice, re-importing (twice) and renaming, creating a new database and importing on that, it’s STILL not right.

To hell with it. To hell with WordPress. You suck.

Well, thought I had it. I had WordPress installed and running nicely, just without my previous posts and comments. So I tried to restore the database from backup. Exported it, it wouldn’t import it. Did it again, got a .gz file. Downloaded the damn utility to unzip it and got a file. Imported that. Now all the new stuff is freaking gone!

I swear to God you people make this so much harder than it needs to be. I realize you’re all much smarter than we are, but why the hell can’t you make something that spells out what you’re supposed to do and makes it actually functional for people who don’t do this every day? Would that be too much to ask?

And then when I go to the install.php file, I get this:

    Already Installed
You appear to have already installed WordPress. To reinstall please clear your old database tables first.

I don’t recall that being in the several-step-progress to reinstall. I DID back up the database, but do I then have to clear that out by killing it all out of my SQL thing and then re-doing it?

Okay, this is strange. I did the reinstall. It’s obviously linking to the database because my posts are coming up. But it’s not in the format that it was in before and it won’t let me login. Strange. I can’t get it back to the way it looked before, but the posts are there.

All the links go to /blog/filename_whatever and not to the new directory /the_blog/ where I’ve put all the new files. Hmmmmm.

Well, someone or something (host hasn’t responded yet – it’s the holiday) deleted the entire /blog/ folder for me. Or something.

But I was able to go in and kill 99% of every file that was on my website (after backing it up, of course) except a placeholder front page.

NOW I can’t create a folder called /blog/. I can create a folder called /BLOG/ or /anyotherwordyoucanthinkof, but not /blog/ and that makes no sense.

I can’t even make a folder and then RENAME it /blog/.

Every time, my FTP program says:

    MKD blog
550 blog: no such file or directory

Did anybody else get this sorted yesterday? Was it just a matter of reinstalling?

Now my FTP won’t let me create a new folder called “/blog/” after somebody killed that folder. I can create a new folder with any other name, I just can’t create one called /blog/

Wow, now the whole FOLDER is gone. Maybe my hosting people did that. Which is fine. They just haven’t told me. I hope it was them.

Sadly, mine didn’t just start working again, but I have been messing with trying to reinstall.

I can’t delete the offending files, though it says I have permission to. My host’s support people say they changed the permissions and that I should be able to delete that damn blog-header.php file, but I still can’t.

    @bob Smith

I tried to do that. I tried pasting clean text into it, it wouldn’t update. Even though the permissions on the file SAY read/write access for owner.

Even though my host SAYS it has changed the permissions so that I can delete the files, I still can’t. Not in FTP. And I can’t download telnet to be able to try to get in that way to chmod.

I can try at home. But I’m really ticked off at this moron who did this.

I have put in a support ticket with my host to see about changing permissions on files I want to delete. Will keep you updated.

No one seems to know for certain what’s going on.

It may not be widespread on any one host, but it may be widespread among WordPress users, who may be spread around all over the place.

Can’t delete the garbage wp-blog-header.php file, even though it SAYS I have permission to.

    Nope. Ain’t working. Same thing.

Now my internal files in that directory, which came up before, aren’t coming up.

    Fark this nonsense.
