ah! Someone was unpublishing the career details pages without my knowledge. I republished them and now it is working. Sorry for the fuss!
Actually I just noticed that the job details page does not work on Macs. I retested with Safari and firefox and am getting a 404 on a MacBook Pro and iPhone.
