I have the same problem and it seems to me that there is no field “wpcr3_enable” in the postmeta-table by default. Thus, using the backend to set the reviews ON (and after that OFF) creates this field and then the shortcode works.
It would be nice if the shortcode would create the field when a review is inserted. But I am not familiar enough with PHP to do it within the template. Thus your workaround helped me a lot.
