  • Tanya,

    Please see the FAQ – it describes the issues with sometimes no viewer or not working in particular browsers.

    If you need help with a particular document, please provide more information. Thanks.

    I can see it. But there are a few variables that can make this viewer a little “flaky” like the protected mode issue in IE, and browser cache issues. I would consider it fairly high availability but quirks do arise. Like the protected mode issue, though, it’s usually locally weird issues that make a fuss.

    If you haven’t checked it out, the Help page gives answer to almost all of the issues that might possibly arise.

    Hope this helps.

    That’s helpful, but not as helpful as you providing the example. If you want to do so privately, please use the Support tab in GDE Settings.

    Usually this just means your link is wrong in the shortcode. Fix the link and the error will likely disappear. If the link isn’t wrong, you will have to provide some more information (a link to the problem?).

    That message comes from Google and cannot be changed, other than translated to another Google Docs supported language, which you can set in GDE Settings.

    Thanks; glad you could resolve the problem.

    This fix was included in GDE 2.5.9 and doesn’t need to be manually applied anymore.

    Hello,

    The issue from that thread was rolled into the latest update, so there is no need to apply it. However HTTPS may still be the issue if the parent page is HTTPS since the document you’re linking to is HTTP. If so, change your $resume variable to the https version.

    FWIW I was able to embed the resume URL in your sample code without issue, so if the above doesn’t happen to be the cause, I would suggest following up on the usual suspects – clearing browser cache and Google cookies. If you’re still stuck, please send a support request from the plugin settings (Support tab) so I can see the URL with the problem and some debug information.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

    Great, I’ll be sure to include that patch in the next update. Thanks for pointing out the issue.

    Hi Fabrice,

    Thanks for your feedback. Unfortunately there remains no useful way to modify the default zoom. I had planned to build an alternate viewer (break out of Google’s mold) to introduce this ability, but the codebase of the underlying Google Viewer technology has been very unstable over the last several months. So I’ve spent a lot of time tracking down and patching things, and in some cases eliminating features I used to be able to support. I wish I could say that bode well for the future of this plugin, but it definitely makes it difficult to pursue new features.

    Wish I had a better answer to give, but that’s the current reality!

    Kevin

    You are right, the standard viewer is hardcoded to use http rather than https. This is an oversight that I’ll correct in a future patch.

    To confirm this you can manually edit the gviewer.php file on line 245 where it currently reads:

    $lnk = "http://docs.google.com/viewer?url=" . urlencode( $links[0] ) . "&hl=" . $lang;

    to read:

    $lnk = "//docs.google.com/viewer?url=" . urlencode( $links[0] ) . "&hl=" . $lang;

    If you’re able to make that adjustment (you can do so from the plugin editor within wordpress, if you wish), let me know if it works for you.

    This is an easy fix; just change your document link to https to match the protocol of your parent page. See the third bullet in this section for more thorough explanation:

    Unfortunately, there is no solution for this that works in all major browsers. There is no CSS standard for changing the scrollbar colors, which is why no sample of this was provided in the dark.css. There are only different browser vendors’ hacks.

    You might be able to piece together a solution that works in some portion of browsers, if you’re interested in pursuing that, by Googling “change scrollbar colors with CSS” or something like that. IE and Chrome both have some proprietary tags (different between the two) that can do this. Firefox doesn’t do this.

    Hey, I want to help, but please read carefully.

    Send me your request via the Support tab, not here. What you’re asking for is a customization which I would do as a favor.

    No, you definitely do not want to place your CSS file in the GDE directory, as I mentioned. It would get lost when the plugin was upgraded. Put it in your uploads folder or somewhere else static. You can probably get away with using the dark.css and just changing some of the color values; you don’t have to make a new file from scratch (that’s why the sample is provided).

    Then you get the full URL of the CSS file you created (edited) and put that URL in the “custom CSS file” setting of whatever profile(s) you wish to use it with.

    Hope this helps.

    You’ll want to put the css file somewhere other than the GDE directory so it isn’t overwritten if the plugin is upgraded. Use FTP or the file manager in your site’s control panel to put it in another directory.

    If you don’t know CSS then doing the customization is going to be hard. If you want specific help please use the Support tab. I need to know what color you want to use for the background; the buttons themselves will be either white or black unless you can recolor the toolbar images, or can get someone to do that for you.

    A Google account isn’t required, but if you have one and your cookies are corrupt/conflicting/etc. you might encounter this problem.
