Replying to my own post here! I did find a great Role Manger plugin that allows me to do what I want for now.
However, it seems logical to me that, by default, an Author should be able to edit pages for which s/he is the designated author.
I am using WordPress as a (fabulous) light-weight CMS and I also noticed that this feature was lacking. It would be very much appreciated.
