I found the answer – nothing to do with this plugin. WP Engine disables orderby rand. Just in case anyone else from WP engine comes looking for the answer.

Update: So when I returned from writing this post, the images were there.

Originally, when they failed they were giving an HTTP error (I have no more info about that error, it just came up in red on the side of the upload screen)

After I changed the sizing parameters and turned on debug, they appeared to be hanging during upload, and then just showing the title of the picture.

Perhaps I am just impatient and the title with no thumbnail just indicated they were still processing?

I’d still love any advice you could give me, given that it really did take quite a long time to resolve and I’m concerned that our writers are going to find the process mystifying.
