I tested the custom jetpack install you made on a site on this hosting and haven’t been able to replicate the error so far which seems promising, looking forward to having that exception in the standard install.
Terrific, thank you, I’ll try that. If I put the custom version on a site, when the next jetpack update rolls out will it include that so that I can simply update to the new version and all will be well?
Is it likely to be a short timeframe for http://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/2041#no1 to be actioned and part of the standard jetpack updates? Would like to work out whether I will wait for that update or go ahead and use the custom version.
I tried using htaccess to override it and that didnt work either in case you are wondering.
I would really like for it to be as easily solved as that but we can’t its a shared cloud hosting and they won’t change the php.ini just for our sites.
Is there a way that jetpack can stop using the function or use something else instead? If the host has disabled it does that mean that they think its a security threat? In which case, is it?

Actually it does work, i just had the widget in the wrong spot, however the image loses its alignment and goes to default of none alignment even though it is set with css to align right. That is probably the theme css though and not the plugin i guess causing it
Automatic smushing has been disabled temporarily due to an error. Operation timed out after 20 seconds with 0 bytes received
and then adding new images get stuck at crunching now 🙁
pity, it seems like a great idea that would be worth paying for access to even.
I have a similar problem. It was working ok up until about a month ago but has since stopped. I have been carrying out the updates as they have become available for wp and other plugins. I’m really not sure what is wrong.
The gallery thumbnails works ok. I can load the image rotator swf file by itself so the path to that is ok.
i have the slideshow enabled in the options.
when i look at the output in the page on the front end i see this where the slideshow should be

– i seem to be noticing some strange issues when upgrading the plugin and then viewing a page that already had columns on an existing page. i havent figured out exactly what combination of settings causes this yet.
