Switched from WAMP to XAMPP – problem solved.
After many frustrating trials of various potential solutions, I thought it might be a local server version issue. Tried different versions of WAMP. NO luck. Then I switched to XAMPP. All-in-one worked perfectly.
I’m sharing this to potentially save someone else the frustrations I experienced trying to solve this problem.
Runs fine on Bluehost server. Did one more test of NextGen – this time on Bluehost server – works well, no captions problem.
Looks like the problem was running the plug-in on a WAMP server. I’ve never had this issue before. Normally I test my websites locally (on the hard drive of my computer) using a WAMP server (local server set up on my harddrive – not on the Internet).
NextGen captions won’t run on a WAMP server but does run on BlueHost. Seems to require being live on the Internet.
Thank you for your efforts to troubleshoot this issue. Looks like the problem is solved for me.

Have an old computer running windows 7, php 5.4.16 on WaMP Server 2.4. Same exact problem. So, the problem isn’t php 7. Changing to WordPress theme 2015 did not help either.
I’m thinking something in the new NextGen gallery code is blocking the legacy templates, at least in some windows – wordpress – server configurations, like mine.

Just installed a new wordpress site, using the WordPress 2016 theme. Then installed nextgen – a new install from wordpress.org. No other plug-ins installed.
Still getting [not a valid template] for legacy templates.
So, it is not a theme or plug-in conflict.
I’m running the wamp64 server with php7 on windows 10.
Hope you can fix this
Becky:
I very much appreciate your suggestions.I deactivated all my plug-ins except nextGen, I changed to WordPress 2016 theme, I updated to latest NextGen version, even uninstalled and reinstalled nextGen.
Still getting [not a valid template] for all legacy templates. Default template works fine.
It seems there may be something about the “legacy” templates that can conflict with certain combinations of WordPress, Windows 10, php 7 and the like. Perhaps a new “captions” template, non-legacy would work with all configurations.Thank you for your reply and all efforts to solve this issue.
Becky:
I followed your link and that is exactly what I see. But when I use it, I get the error message[Not a valid template]
All the legacy templates give me the error message. Only the “default” template works.
Thanks for your reply.

In reply to: [Customizr] Header Customization – limitedThank you Tandruil. This is very helpful.
I hope in time the developers of customizr will build a bit of this style.css customizing for the header into the main controls for the theme.

In reply to: [Customizr] Header Customization – limitedAppreciate the reply. I am running the theme in WAMP on the hard drive of my computer. I like to test ideas first on a hard drive before I commit to the web. So, sorry, don’t have a URL.
I tried setting the logo as “centered” – that seems to allow for a full size header. Then I still wish there was a simple control for the horizontal main menu to be centered rather than just right or left.

Great reply! Will try your suggestions. Normally I test plug-ins on a localhost WAMP server (on my computer not live on Internet). If this works well locally I will share with community. Thanks!
Thanks Cais! Wow – this is major recoding! I very much appreciate your reply.
Cais – I very much appreciate your reply. There are two things I would like to do with the CSS command. One is to change the color – make it lighter in color. The other is to possibly move the whole command to under the the thumbnails instead of over. Might also like to remove brackets.
I own Photocrati theme and like it very much. I’m looking to use NextGen with other theme for some similar effects. I’m considering buying nextgen plus. However, for now, would prefer to work with free version.
Cais – thanks for your reply. I still need some help. It looks like, if I go to the styles – customization options, I should be able to write a css line that would move the slideshowlink display from above the thumbnails to below.
Can you tell me the specific css line to write?
Following what I read in firebug I tried these that did not work
.slideshowlink {flex:end}
.wp-smiley {flex:end}
Sure would love to have the specific css line that would work!
Thanks
