Took me a week to find the fix for this! Just publish, attributes will not display in preview for some reason:

tried ellenm1’s fix but it did not help.

hello,
go into the contact form admin panel and click on your field.
check the box in “Set Style” and expand the settings for it.
then add css to “Field CSS Style”, try something like “background-color:#000”.
you should be able to adjust font style in the same way.
