I had EXACTLY this problem, with no ugly redirects involved.
I had just upgraded from 2.3.2 to 2.5.1.
Going to settings, and making the blog name the same URL as the wordpress name solved the problem. Obviously there is a bug.

I don’t favor grey type because even though I use very hi-res monitors, my 50+ yr old eyes find it tiring to read. As I get older I am more sympathetic to the needs of people with weaker faculties.
That darn search box was a problem before, I’ll have to ask my Mac buddy about it. Konquerer *should* render it the same as Safari but maybe not.
I believe we can thank Wired for a variety of unreadable type&color combinations, but that’s just my 2 cents. :>)

I’ll loosen the doctype redirect. Hadn’t thought about it. If I stick raw html in again I’ll be more careful.
