ok, ill try that in the morning.
    can i just ask though.
i install it through ftp (ie copying the wpsc folder to the /plugins folder)
so will all the files just install to the place where i point to, ie /plugins and not into the / uploads file.
or will it know where to put them and do it automatically.

if it wont do it automatically do i need to find a way to install via the add new plugins in wp and up load the .zip there?

if you could let me know which way to do it before i try ill be very happy.

    thanks

    james

i then set permission of wp-content to 777
    i uploaded the image.

so an uploads folder was created.
but in it there is only one folder called 2010
    /public_html/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010

so when i go back to products i still get this message,

The following directories are not writable:
    /home/xxxx/public_html/blog/wp-content/uploads/wpsc/downloadables/
    /home/xxxx/public_html/blog/wp-content/uploads/wpsc/previews/
    /home/xxxx/public_html/blog/wp-content/uploads/wpsc/product_images/
    /home/xxxxx/public_html/blog/wp-content/uploads/wpsc/product_images/thumbnails/
    /home/xxxx/public_html/blog/wp-content/uploads/wpsc/category_images/
    /home/xxxxx/public_html/blog/wp-content/uploads/wpsc/upgrades/
You won’t be able to upload any images or files here. You will need to change the permissions on these directories to make them writable

so please can anyone tell me what do i do?

i tried to upload an image, it said,

Unable to create directory /home/xxx/public_html/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/02. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

so i went into filezilla and changed permission to /blog/wp-content and set permissions to write for everything under and including wp-content.

i tried again to upload and got this message:
Unable to create directory /home/xxx/public_html/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/02. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

so, same message again, am i changning permission for the wrong folder?

    no,
all i have only just installed wordpress yesterday.

i have not added any themes or images or anything.

i am still on the default theme and the first thing i did was install the wp-ecommerce plugin. (in my wp-content/plugins folder)

it appeared in plugin menu and i clicked activate.
    it activated.
i altered regional settings under products/settings in wp/admin
then i clicked on products/products and got the message:

The following directories are not writable:
    home/xxx/public_html/blog/wp-content/uploads/wpsc/downloadables/
    /home/xxx/public_html/blog/wp-content/uploads/wpsc/previews/
    /home/xxx/public_html/blog/wp-content/uploads/wpsc/product_images/
    /home/xxx/public_html/blog/wp-content/uploads/wpsc/product_images/thumbnails/
    /home/xxx/public_html/blog/wp-content/uploads/wpsc/category_images/
    /home/xxx/public_html/blog/wp-content/uploads/wpsc/upgrades/

I have been into filezilla and edited the permission settings on the host server for everything under /blog/wp-content and changed it to 777 including all sub files and directories.

i went back to products/products in wp but still had the not writable message re the above listed files.

i then changed the permissions back to normal.

note: i can add products to the page still, but not upload pics etc according to the warning/alert message.

There are some other forum questions on similar subject if you type in search no uploads directory or something. It has been said that sometimes there is no wp/uploads folder, but i dont understand why or what i need to do about it.

    Please help.

    Thanks.

    another question,

if i am getting the message:
    Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at /home/a4438039. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

I presume i am typing the correct url in to connect? yes?
    Also,
may i just confirm that the db username and password are those listed as ftp username
    and ftp password?

    yes?

if yes to the above then what is my dbhost name?

    Thread Starter jamesthethinkery

    (@jamesthethinkery)

    so

here is a pic of all my settings.

    http://i50.tinypic.com/2vt3axl.jpg

which of those things is my dbhost name?

    Thread Starter jamesthethinkery

    (@jamesthethinkery)

    thanks.

do i put it in as this?
    /** MySQL hostname */
    define(‘DB_HOST’, ‘server34.000webhost.com’);

    or /** MySQL hostname */
    define(‘SERVERNAME‘, ‘server34.000webhost.com’);

    Thanks.

So is it not always listed as DB HOST in the settings?
