I am having the same problem. I have WP 3.9.1 and have downloaded Symple 1.6 from the developer’s website, but the button still does not show in my page editor.
Before installing 1.6 I uninstalled 1.4.
I have the Gist Github Shortcode plugin, and that button does appear correctly. Deactiviating the Gist plugin did not fix the Symple problem either.
There doesn’t seem to be a list of the short codes anywhere. Best I have come up with is this: http://wpexplorer-demos.com/symple-shortcodes/inserting-shortcodes/ which shows some of the parameters.
