Thanks all for your advice. I spoke to host and they simply removed everything and installed the wordpress application for me. All sorted!

Success! I managed it by logging into PHPadmin in xampp.

Thanks Jan I appreciate the quick response. I’ve read the instructions but there is no ‘user’ link in the admin panel. The other options look a bit too technical for me to attempt, so I’m still stuck.
