Still hoping for an answer here…
Can anyone tell me if the above code for a robot.txt file would present any problems? And, is there any potential conflicts with a robot.txt file depending on how my host’s server is configured? Thanks in advance!

    RVooDoo….

really? Must make it’s own DB entries? Does it actually do anything? Like…it lets you select the feature, but your new template doesn’t have any ability to output that I don’t think?
Just curious now, dunno if you’ve tested that

No, it doesn’t work. I went in and tested it with meta keywords. From the admin panel it appears to work, but nothing shows up in the front end, or in the source code. I was contemplating reverting back to that theme, so that was why I hadn’t dumped those files, but I didn’t like some of the coding in their template. But again, even with the theme deactivated it still shows up in the admin post area. And, it was purely my space-cadet moment that was thinking it was part of 2.9.1 – lol.

Would be nice though, if WordPress had made that a stock feature! 😮

I used the plugin before with other wordpress sites where it worked fine. It’s only my current site it is causing issues with.

By chance are you on the same server you were before, with the same host? If not, it could be related to how your host’s server configuration is set up. Just a wild guess, and thought I would ask in case your blog was moved from where you had it before.

I am soooo over my head in WordPress.

    Hi Maudie,

I was wondering if it was a template issue, since I ran into the same problem with one of the templates I tried. Even though it was supposed to be compatible with the newest version of WP, it just wasn’t the case.

For someone who is feeling over their head in WordPress, you’re off to a good start! Your template is fun, and your blog is looking good! How about giving the pretty permalinks a go? It will be better for your blog in the long run for seo. I also looked for a ‘contact’ form or ‘contact’ mailto link from your blog, but didn’t see one. It’s always good to add one of those to your blog too. Have fun with your WordPress blog – you’re probably doing better than you think. 🙂

    Maudie,

See if this will help you to get the Meta widget moved off the sidebar:

From your WP admin dashboard, temporarily revert back to the default theme. Then go back to the widget area to move the Meta widget into the non-active widget area. Once you have it moved over there, then go back in and select the theme you desire. That might get the widget unstuck. I had a theme that had a bug in it with one of the widgets, and that might be the case with the one you have. So, if you revert back to the default theme, then it might work out the problem.

I am the only person who will be writing anything on my blog, except for comments from any readers … which have to be okayed by me before publication. Have I got that right?

Since you will be the only person writing posts then you will want the default setting to be ‘subscriber’ for any new person who may register, if you are even going to allow registrations. Setting the role or status level doesn’t have anything to do with comments. Comments are controlled under different settings.

It “was” set at subscriber when I first saw the section and I’d changed it. I guess that is a default setting????

Subscriber is the lowest role and only allows people to subscribe to your blog, and they will not be able to write blog posts. In that you do not want anyone else to be authorized to write blog posts, then you should leave the default role at ‘Subscriber’ for everyone else (who might register).

Your role needs to be Administrator, or you’ll lock yourself out of your dashboard.

To clarify, make sure YOUR role is set to Administrator, but for new registrations you should leave the default setting at Subscriber.

If in the future you wish to allow someone else to contribute then you can change each individual as per what you want them to be authorized to do.

    shakhawat_jaheed,

Database stuff isn’t a strong area of experience for me, so I’m not the best one to provide assistance. If you haven’t already taken a look at these, you may find them helpful if you haven’t done database restore from a backup before.
    http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/restore/
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Restoring_Your_Database_From_Backup

My assumption is that you should be able to drop just the wp_options, and then restore just that portion, but again, I’m not the one to ask. Maybe one of those links above might be of help until someone else here can give you some assistance.

Researching this further, this is what I came up with:

For WordPress users, its very easy to fix this. Go On your Root of Server, create new File i.e robots.txt, Now paste the following lines in it:

        Sitemap: http://www.yoursitename.com/sitemap.xml
        User-agent: Googlebot
        Disallow: /*/trackback
        Disallow: /*/feed
        Disallow: /*/comments
        Disallow: /*?*
        Disallow: /*?
        Disallow: /*page/*

        User-agent: *
        Disallow: /cgi-bin/
        Disallow: /wp-admin/
        Disallow: /wp-includes/
        Disallow: /wp-content/plugins/
        Disallow: /wp-content/themes/
        Disallow: /trackback
        Disallow: /comments
        Disallow: /feed

Could a mod or someone here inform me if this would present any problems with WP 2.9.1, or with upgrades? Thanks.

    Hi Robertblog,

For starters, just thought I would mention that the profile images in Gravatar should automatically show up from Gravatar, without the plugin, like when people comment.

You need to install plugins into the WP plugin directory, which is found in the WP Content directory here: wp-content/plugins

Did you install it in the correct location?

So does anyone know of a fix to allow the “Platinum SEO” plugin to stay in use and fix the site title problem?

    NeedforName,
I’m not familiar with that plugin either. In your first post you mentioned that you didn’t have problems with it before. Can you backtrack and determine what you changed or added to your site, which may be affecting it? Maybe another plugin that you have since added is presenting a conflict? Or, did you do an upgrade to WP while that was activated? Just wondering if there is something else that you can identify, that’s perhaps contributing to the problem since it worked for you before.

Still hoping to find a solution for this since I can’t use the All in one SEO pack. Anyone know another way to fix my duplicate title tag issue?

    inspired2write

    (@inspired2write)

Just for clarification…..that is if your are using the Atahualpa theme….

bfa_ata tells me that its specific to Bytes for All, Atahualpa
that option doesn’t come standard with WP

Thanks for correcting me on that. I spaced out about that being a feature with Atahualpa, because even if I choose a different template, that still shows up under my wysiwyg.

@inspired2write Keep in mind that the blog tagline has NOTHING to do with the META title tag.

Lol – that’s I guess why I shouldn’t stay up so late. It was O-dark-thirty when I did the earlier post about the title tag. Thanks for the correction. 😮

Inspired2Write, very kind of you to offer such an explanatory answer for me.

Thank you! I’m happy it was of help to you!

If I turn it off, I loose all the SEO goodies it allows me to ad to every blog post.

If you’re mainly concerned about seo for each post, a built in feature of 2.9.1 provides you with the ability to add ‘custom fields’ at the bottom of every post if you wish. As an example, you can select to add the following: Meta description, meta keywords, meta title.

To locate that area, open one of your blog posts, or create a new one, and then scroll down to where you see “Custom Fields”. Then select from the drop down menu what you want. For Meta Keywords, you would select:
    bfa_ata_meta_keywords
Then, in the text field box to the right of that menu, you would write in your keywords. Here’s the full scoop:

Your database very well could have been compromised. You may want to go into your phpmyadmin and take a look at your database. Also, look for possible rogue users in the profiles, and the meta profile areas. You could also do a search for some of the code like for eval and for base64_decode and see what you come up with.

If the exploit scanner revealed it is in your admin php files, it doesn’t mean it’s the only place that’s been affected.

By the way, I didn’t notice if you stated whether or not you notified your host, plus be sure to immediately change all your passwords to good strong ones. Good luck. You have your work cut out for you!

    (@inspired2write)

You should already be set as an administrator. If you set your status (role) at anything less than that, then you will get locked out of your sites admin panel.

The default role for new users who might register (if you will allow registrations) should be set at ‘subscriber’. Subscribers don’t have publishing authorization.

For yourself, if you want to establish a second user profile to use for publishing your blog posts, you could select a role below ‘Admin’, but when you are logged in with a user id less than admin, then you won’t have access to other areas of the admin dashboard.

Not sure if that answers your question or not. I wasn’t sure exactly what you were asking.
