1. Themes on WordPress.org are not allowed to come with content or include importable sample content. Themes are blank by default and by design. If you dislike this rule that all theme authors have to follow, please feel free to contact the Theme Review Team and state your opinions.
2. As you have not provided a link to your website where I could see the theme live, I cannot guess what the reason for your issues could be.

Thank you for your honest feedback.
Even though I can’t say anything in regards to the design, I would like to point out that there IS a complete video tutorial explaining the theme’s set up process. It is available here: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/read-this-first-podcast-theme-video-guide/
I’m not sure that it is possible to make the set up instructions any more easy to follow as a video with audio instructions.
If I missed something in the set up process then please let me know, it would be useful to know what exactly you had troubles with.Thank you and have a great day!

You are not using posts and categories, so this feature will not work for you.
You are supposed to have one standard Post per podcast episode. In that case the theme will be able to display the post in the appropriate location on the homepage.As you are doing it in a completely different manner (I don’t know why), then some of this theme’s features will not be available to you.

There are third-party plugins that control the visibility of widgets on a per-page basis. I think there’s a Widget Visibility module in Jetpack that does that.But you are correct about merch. It’s something to think about and consider for future theme updates.
