Found the problem. I set my PHP version to 5.5 on the server and all is well.
Solution posted by “mbeebee” worked for me.
I downloaded a fresh copy of WP 4.1, and replaced the wp-includes/functions.php file. Everything seems to work now, though it’s still prompting me to upgrade.
