Thanks Beth. To be more specific and only put a border around the gallery plugin thumbnails, you should use the following:

You would need to modify your theme the allow the TEXT widget to process shortcodes. This is not a plugin bug.

That is planned for a future release.
I don’t see the gallery installed on your site any more.
The thumb border change can be handled by modifying the CSS file of the gallery. The is not a default option because most people have not wanted this.
