Problem solved!!!!!!
There was a setting on our Web Application Firewall that forced HTML rewrite that messed up the JSON return values
I am at a complete loss at this point, I tried doing the following and I get the same problem in all cases:
CentOS 6.5 Server running Apache and WordPress 3.8.1 (this is the original server) – Problem exists
CentOS 5.10 default installation running Apache and WordPress 3.8.1 – Problem exists
Ubuntu 12.04 LT LAMP default installation Worpdress 3.8.1 – Problem exists
Ubuntu 12.04 LT LAMP default installation Worpdress 3.6.1 – Problem exists
I tried multiple browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox) – Still no luck!
