While I didnt solve the problem, the Twenty Sixteen WordPress Theme has a very nice layout that puts the references more or less in the middle and solves the problem for me to a satisfactory degree.
But I wanna try out the css as well. Could you give kindly give me a sample css command you use to style the Zotpress References?

Update:
I have installed a plugin to change to loading order of plugins and tried all configurations, from zotpress being loaded first to last, and there is sadly no difference in the behavior.
Is anybody else experiencing similar problems?
