In reply to: clean install of WP 2.8 not workingFantastico does the install, creates the database, db-user, sets-up the admin account in wordpress, etc.
Yes, and chances are it also sets-up your db in latin1…if you have basic tech skills, then a manual install is the way to go to ensure a clean/proper install.

In reply to: Can’t get to admin page after 2.8.1 auto updateJust an update con ocscrap’s site…it was updated with dozens of active plugins…the db had over 50 additional tables due to plugins.
The lesson…disable plugins before attempting to upgrade.

In reply to: How can I move my local WP installation and content to my domain?…or replaced “localhost:8888” with “domain.com/blog”
No need to go further back in the url and include http://www. or http://
You could have both in various places in the db and if you replace on one, then you don’t get the other…

In reply to: Can’t get to admin page after 2.8.1 auto updateOkay, so you have followed the video directions here:
http://educhalk.org/blog/?p=38
and deactivated your plugins?
If so, try FTPing to your site and go into wp-content/themes and rename your active theme from wezine to wezineBAK — just make sure the default theme is still in the directory. That should cause WP to default back to the Kubrick theme. Then try to login.
I’ll be here for another 20 minutes or so, then will be offline for a few hours, but I’ll check back later today.

In reply to: Best way to upgrade 2.7.1 to 2.8.1I had been using the auto upgrade and auto plugin install features since WP 2.7 on one of my dedicated servers with no problems. Then a couple months ago, I got a new VPS server and set-up some WP installs on it. When I tried to use the auto-upgrade, I ran into the same problem you are experiencing. I did some searching and found a rather detailed explanation of the problem on a blog post somewhere on the Internet…can’t remember where now and can’t seem to find it again.
But, (if I remember correctly) I enabled CGI mode on my VPS to solve the problem. I can’t remember all the details about this problem, but not all server configurations will allow the auto-upgrade script to work. I’m sure the blog post is still there, it’ll just take some hard searching to find it. WP recognizes that this feature will not work with all hosts…see the following:…just not a lot of detail there as to why.

In reply to: Can’t get to admin page after 2.8.1 auto updatejust renaming the plugin folder isnt enough!
Sometimes that will do it, but other times it won’t and you do have to disable them in the db. Glad you got it fixed.
