Annnd I guess all day of staring at a screen just started to make me go crazy:
I had tried deleting extra space on line 20 of functions.php … but the wrong functions.php. I checked the one in the main WordPress folder under wp-includes, NOT the one in my theme directory. I forgot I made edits to it earlier in the day.
