Thanks for your reply, Rene @renehermi. You are spot on with your suggestion. The problem was with Elementor Pro. Sadly deactivating and reconnecting the license key did not fix it because it kept connecting with the wrong URL of the staging site and I could not change it manually.

The only solution I could think of was to wipe everything clean: uninstall wordpress, set up a new, squeaky clean wordpress installation and restore from the backups that I thankfully had. Once I reconnected the Elementor Pro license in this new installation it was all good! 🙂
