I spoke to soon.
I am still having trouble with Chrome… half the time it allows me to login. The other half of the time I get:
ERROR: An error was encountered while trying to authenticate. Please try again.
This only occurs while Wordfence 2FA is active from what I can figure out.
Any ideas?
Hi Gerroald
Thanks for the reply and help it appears that this has solved the problem (for now).
Might I suggest that you increase the documentation (If people are using WordPress its pretty safe to assume that their technical knowledge is limited or they would just develop their own site from scratch).
1. Give instructions for how to safely disable the plugin by using FTP on the actual website – Not in this forum (I worked out how to do this from reading on this forum. However the naming conventions of the folders that need to be renamed or moved are not consistent so I had to guess).
2. Give instructions to ensure that users have those server times setup correctly (Hosting and WordPress).
Eg. Contact your web host and ask them how to set your ‘hosting’ server time (I’m in Australia and my host is in the US… until this problem occurred I had never done this… never had to for years and years).
Reading on the forum many users are confused about what their server time should be or is (in relation to their own geographic location). They also don’t know that this may be customisable or how to find it.
Then give instructions on where to find it in wordpress. If you did these things…
…Then half the angst and trouble that people are having will probably go away and it will promote better trust in the robustness of your products and brand.
On another note… making sure these times are in sync also made all my other wordpress logon bugs go away. Strangely in all my googling this was never a suggested answer for that issue either (pre Wordfence 2FA).
Thanks for the good products and getting back to me.

Great to know that someones paying attention to the problems with the new Two Factor Authentication… so what if it’s free.
Don’t release it if you are not prepared to support it or provide trouble shooting docs.
I’m now totally locked out and none of my browsers can access my admin….
Any chance someone can help or give me something to look for as to why it’s not working?
By the way… I really do appreciate both the paid and unpaid services.
Since then I have discovered that this problem seems to be Chrome only and I have disabled all Chrome extensions etc as well as try incognito mode.
Thanks
