I found a fix to my issue. You can do two things:
1. Follow the instructions here:

or
2. Download an SMTP plugin that forces sending email from your own email provider. I used Postman SMTP because it has a great wizard that guides you through the whole process. Simple to use and has great features.
I tried going with #1 first but my site didn’t even contain the php.ini file…
