Hi – thank you for your response but that was the problem – my details did match the credentials for the database yet it still kept giving me that error.
Anyway, I came to mark this as resolved because I got my host to reset/restore everything.

Anyone know how I can wipe everything and start anew?
I tried deleting everything in my home folder via file manager in cpanel and reinstalling wp but still no connection.

Yes I have – quite a few times. Tried again a few more times just then – still no joy. 🙁
