They’ve left it broken like this for a long time. If I were you, I’d try to get another SEO plugin because this one is trash.
It’s a bug that the developers are pretending doesn’t exist. Good luck. They’re going to give you the runaround until they get tired of replying and say, “Oh, by the way we don’t know if this is it but a known bug we have is causing meta description issues.”
