per your suggestion I turned off the “use frontend rendering” and the switching between months and years is no longer throwing the error.

Did something change which would have effected this? I took the WP 4.5 upgrade a week or so ago but that is all I recall. I don’t think I’ve ever been in the advanced settings screen to make any changes previously.

Just wondering if some default setting was affected by a separate change

yes that does. so i have to create a new set of individual calendars with the template tags i want, and then group them.

is it feasible to mark this as a future enhancement? Template Tags are driven at the grouped calendar level
