    Thank you. I just figured out how to turn this behavior off, and actually it was listed in the instructions for Code Markup, so I should’ve just read more carefully 🙂

    “(Optional but recommended) Go to the Options page and click Writing. Make sure “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automaticallyâ€? is not checked. (Otherwise it may do funny things to your code listings.)”

    That “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically� option controls whether it does the auto-balance-tags thing.

    I guess this means my XHTML is more likely to be bad, but I can always use the validator button. I wonder if there’s a way to auto-validate each post (but NOT from the edit window, or else it would complain about my XML all over again)… only AFTER it’s been posted and beautified)
